This year sees the re-introduction of the AAGSC’s Annual Ground Safety Award. This award specifically recognises individuals or teams from the Aviation industry for initiatives and advancements in aviation ground safety. Nominations are now open until the 25th April 2010 for an individual, or a small team in your organisation. You can even self-nominate. There are no specific award categories and all submissions will be considered by a three-person panel, representing ground handlers, airlines and airports. If you or someone within your organisation has made a significant contribution to improvements in ground safety, then complete a nomination form. AAGSC Safety Award

Airport to proactively manage Apron Safety risk by focusing on organizational behaviour.
Our journey comprised of establishing an agreed set of behaviours for all apron users, as a code of conduct, and then as a community testing that we were complying with these behaviours

Manual handling - the hidden costs |

You won't find any of these stories in the media - unlike the road accidents because there is no “blood on the floor” yet there are 400 people in Victoria hurt each week with manual handling injuries. That is a massive 20,800 people per year in one Australian State alone. Some of these people are affected for life and the effect on their families and employers cannot be underestimated.

The AAGSC continues to grow in both size and diversity despite the tough economic environment in which the Aviation Industry is currently operating in. Australian air Express has recently joined the council, adding their experience in the airfreight industry to the forum.

What a fantastic meeting we had in August 2009 at Auckland Airport. This meeting incorporated a number of workshop sessions - 2 dealing with manual handling and one with the issues that members have with the recently implemented CASA drug and Alcohol management plans.

You will probably be told to cut the Occupational Health & Safety
(OHS) budgets too. Pushing back is often useless because the statistics
actually show that there are less incidents during recessions and this
is an important indicator of general safety isn’t it?
Well, no actually. It is more an exercise in understanding human psychology! Let me tell you what happens.
When the world enters recession, budgets are tightened. Just look at your own company’s mandates in these tough times.

AAGSC Hosts Industry Safety Workshop
On 11 May, the Australasian Aviation Ground Safety Council (AAGSC) hosted an Aviation Ground Safety Risk Management Workshop at Melbourne Airport. The workshop was opened to all airside staff and focused on Safety Legislation, Manual Handling and Airport Safety during construction activities. Attendees were present from all Australian States, New Zealand and even the Pacific Islands.
